Strategy for personal efficiency and effectiveness.
Let’s begin by clarifying efficiency and effectiveness:
Efficiency: competency in performance.
Effectiveness: success at achieving a desired result.
My strategy to achieve what I set out to do (effectiveness) in the most competent way (efficiency) is made of three steps:
1. Set SMART goals
‘Without having a goal, it is difficult to score’ (Paul Arden), so to avoid drifting through life one needs to set goals that are:
Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Relevant
Time-bound
2. Plan rigorously. Take time to think before doing.
Ensure you know what, where, why and how before you begin to run. There is no point running towards a dead-end street.. or worse, running without progressing forward.
And remember that the valuable part of planning is the exercise, not just the plan itself.
3. Reflect regularly.
Without reflection, you have no way of tracking your position nor progress towards achieving a goal. Take time to figure out what is working and what is not. Use decision tools if you’ve got too many variables.
